With hectic lifestyles, we often forget or make mistakes, and this can result in back taxes filing. You may be surprised to find many people file their taxes late, forget about filing or simply do not want to pay their taxes. Even so, those who make enough income are required to file a tax return. Take time now to understand how to file late returns, considerations for the late filer and where to file.

The first step is to gather any tax forms, receipts, tax software W-2 forms and 1099 forms for the back taxes filing. Essentially, filing back taxes requires all the standard forms and receipts used on a normal tax year. Make sure to use forms for the correct tax year. Fill in the required paper work and check for deductions as normal. Calculate the taxes according to instructions and double-check figures. Even if your taxes are late, you may still qualify for a refund, but only if you complete the paperwork within three years of the original due date. If there is additional tax due with the back taxes filing, the filer must pay in full or make a payment arrangement. Write a check for the payment and include it with the return. Use the instructions on the form to ensure the form and check go to the right address.

While it is possible to complete back taxes filing by completing the paperwork and sending the form through the Postal Service, the delay in filing causes many people to be anxious that the return is sent to the IRS as quickly as possible. One option is to file online. There are a couple of options for filing late returns online. Visit the IRS website and locate the link for Free File if taxes are six months late. This gives you until October 15 of the year the taxes are due. Your state may have different rules for filing back taxes due the state.Another site, Prior Tax offers an online site that makes back taxes filing easy. The site offers older IRS forms from year past and allows the user to locate old returns needed for filing. Prior Tax charges a minimum of to file federal and state taxes.

Contact an accountant or legal counsel for guidance, form help or recommendations. The federal laws enforce the statute of limitations on taxes that are not paid. The IRS may take as long as 10 years after the filing of a return to collect taxes and there can be penalties and jail time.

If a person owes taxes and fails to file, the IRS can file a return using an estimation of income. This substitute for return form involves some assumptions about income and does not account for all deductions that could be filed. It is often to less expensive to file a late return rather than none at all. Taxes may not be filed on time. The agency does not want to prosecute people that make simple mistakes. Fixing a tax problem with back taxes filings can prevent more severe consequences.

Question by alessa_sunderland: Can someone answer some questions about filing taxes online with H&R Block Taxcut?
I have always had my taxes done by Block (Federal only). I have nothing complicated just w-2′s, yet we pay over $ 170 each time! I was considering filing my own taxes online using Block’s Taxcut because it is only $ 39.95. But I wanted to know if it also does the computations for earned income credit and the child tax credit, and can you still send it directly to the IRS? Will I still be able to have my refund direct deposited into my bank account? Does it take about the same amount of time to get my refund (9-14 days)? and lastly, Is it safe? If anyone has used this online service I would appreciate any info.

Best answer:

Answer by Fool in the Rain
The answer to all of your questions is yes. Just make sure you answer all of the questions it asks correctly and enter your W-2 info correctly as well. And it is totally safe.

Question by Trisha: Online tax filing?
I have been going to HR Block for about 5 years to have my taxes filed, but it seems more logical that I would save money if I did it myself online with the taxact program. So my question is has anyone switched from an office to doing it online, what was your experience with it? I also use the block for two reasons that 1, we get the RAL so we get our money the next day and 2, we use the HR Block bank for all our banking, deposits, checking, line of credit and debit cards. So will doing taxes without the block effect our accounts in anyway and can we still get a quick refund?

Best answer:

Answer by JR
you can do them online at the H&R block website
I`ve been doing mine online for about 7 years.
you get your state refund in about 3 days if you have them direct deposit it to your bank account.
the federal takes about 7 to 10 days using direct deposit.

Question by berecca: Do you know anything about PRIOR YEAR 1120S “free online tax filing” software?
We are WAAAAY behind on filing our taxes, not only personal, but corporate as well. Just filed the 2004 personal return; still need to take care of 2005 and 2006. The IRS is well aware of the situation and circumstances and is not at all hassling us since we don’t OWE them any money. It’s just a matter of filing. The business has declined, so we can’t afford a 300 dollar a pop accountant to do the 1120S for the corporation. I’m really really trying to learn, and I’ve gone up against the IRS before and won, but I just don’t GET the 1120S and all the associated forms and statements. I’m looking for an online resource that will let me plug in the numbers, since I have our totals, and do the amortization and depreciation and ALL that other stuff that I’m just not willing to devote 6 months of my life to learning the proper procedure and best tools, especially since we don’t owe any money and won’t get any money back. My question: Does anyone know of any free online 1120S software?

Best answer:

Answer by wartz
For an 1120S $ 300 is a bargain price. I don’t think you are going to find any free software to do this for any year.
