What is the best program for online US tax (free or otherwise) filing when I have foreign income?

October 30th, 2011 darlees Posted in Online tax filing No Comments »

Question by soccerlemon: What is the best program for online US tax (free or otherwise) filing when I have foreign income?
This is the first year that I am filing taxes where I have income earned in the US and in Canada. I need to report both on my US taxes. I have tried to use the HR Block free online version, but it didn’t even support the Foreign Income Tax Credit form nor was there any help available for some of the undeciperable questions it was asking me.

Has anyone found an online tax filing program that makes this process easy? I’d even be willing to pay if the service can make this process simpler.

You can convert the tax cut to a signature return. A preparer wil then check and make any corrections that are needed. They can also complete any forms needed for the foreign income. Your tax return is a little to complicated to try and complete yourself.

Question by Roger: While filing tax in online how should we inform system regarding our visa status to claim appropriate refud?
Here is my problem. I was in J1 status till Jan – 2008. But my firm assumed that my visa status changed from J1 to H1 on Oct – 2007. They came to know about their wrong perception only late December. Will this have any impact on my tax re fund ? if so what is the best way to file my tax

Answer by chatsplas@sbcglobal.net
You were not legally able to work in US on a J1 Visa.

When you file your tax return it asks if you were a US citizen or resident, and the legal answer is NO. However you can file all income earned during the year, using your SSN or ITIN. The IRS expects you to file on all income received, regardless of your legal status. And they don’t report you to Immigration, either. So file!

Free Tax Programs

September 29th, 2011 darlees Posted in Online tax filing No Comments »

If you are looking for ways to file free taxes then free tax program may sound like popular option to you. IRS or Internal Revenue Services has agreed to a long term partnership with around nineteen tax software companies. This agreement between IRS and Tax software companies has been named as Free File Alliance.

This alliance was first formed in the month of October in the year 2002. It made free tax programs available to the millions of taxpayers. These free programs let the taxpayers who meet the guidelines and criteria file their taxes free of cost. It is estimated that 70% of the people who file taxes are eligible to use these programs that are offered within the alliance.

You may ask why IRS is doing such things. This is because the Federal Government wants that majority of the tax returns to be filed electronically. There are many reasons behind federal government using electronic tax return processing. Some of the reasons are discussed below.

•    By filing taxes electronically one is able to save a lot of time and energy. It becomes easier on both the part of the taxpayers as well as the tax authorities.

•    The refunds in such programs are much faster than the traditional way.

•    It is also a compelling way to introduce taxpayers to a completely new and reliable way of preparing and filing online taxes.

Lastly, the main purpose of IRS free tax programs is to make the entire procedure of filing tax returns easier and convenient for you.

How to Expedite A Tax Refund

September 9th, 2011 darlees Posted in Online tax filing No Comments »

If you have a refund coming, you want the money as soon as you can possibly get it.  Here are a few ideas to help you accomplish that.

Companies do not have to issue your tax documents until January 31st.  Unfortunately, you cannot force them to do this earlier, and most hold out until the last moment.

Online tax returns are gaining in popularity and they are one of the fastest ways to file and receive your refund quickly.  You can buy the software any place and if you qualify, you can even file for free.  Check out the IRS website for more information on online filing.

Have your refund direct deposited into your checking or savings account.  If you do this in conjunction with online filing, you can generally have your refund money in your account in about 3 to 5 days.

You can file your return online and have your refund mailed to you.  This will cut your waiting time down by about 2 to 3 weeks.

You can get a 24-hour tax refund from many of the big income tax service companies.  Just remember that what you are going to get is actually a loan based upon your credit, and that fees, charges, and interest will apply.

Many income tax service businesses are going with the speedy return payments and rebate anticipation loans.  Just remember that these are all loans, commonly serviced by a third party bank.  If you are not careful, you could lose a lot of your return dollars to tax preparation fees, interest, and charges.  Unless you need the money very desperately it is better to wait and get your refund through one of the more standard, free procedures.

The best recommendation for speedy processing and issuing of your refund is through the online tax programs in conjunction with direct deposit.  If you cannot, for some reason, facilitate direct deposit, you may have a friend or relative provide you with an account number into which you can have the money deposited.  Be careful, however, because once the money is in their account it is only their honesty that will get it to you.  The better idea for people without a direct deposit option is to file online and request that the refund is mailed to you in the form of a check.

Again, remember to be very careful in how you approach expediting your return.  The IRS will not send you another check if you get ripped off.
