The catch for those software company’s when they offer to let you file your federal tax either for free or with little fee, that you must do your state and pay extra fee for that as you have to use the same software. Most tax professionals do buy their software every year, which includes fed and all states. For you you need to buy the Fed and AZ state software for your federal package made by the same company.

I use TurboTax for my personal taxes. I was told by someone at HR Block that they use the same software in their stores that you can buy off the shelf at Target or Walmart for $ 60.

The software that the commercial companies (H&R Block, independent tax preparers, etc.) use can handle a 1040NR but I do not think that there are any software packages or websites that allow you to do a 1040NR on your own.

The User License Agreement that you agree to when installing H&R Block At Home software states that it can only be installed on one computer at a time, however it comes with 5-free e-files which are meant to be used. If you and your friend can use the software from the same computer, then feel free to split the cost! Just make sure your friend does the taxes his/herself. If you do the taxes for them this is considered charging them for the use of the program (another violation of the License) Hope this helps!
